Extra stadium info – Sparta Stadion
The stadium is nicknamed Het Kasteel (The Castle). It was one of the venues for the Games of the Olympiad in 1928. Het Kasteel hosted two Olympic football matches. The Netherlands won the first one against Belgium in front of 20,000 spectators. The second match was a tie between the Netherlands and Chile. 18,000 people showed up for the game. Sparta Rotterdam use the Sparta Stadion for home matches. The club was founded in 1888. They won the Dutch top division in 1909 for the first time in their history.
