The venue in Overijssel was renovated several times. The stadium’s record attendance was broken in 1969, when 26,000 spectators showed up for a football match between the Go Ahead Eagles and FC Twente. In 1973, the national football team of the Netherlands played their first game at De Adelaarshorst. They won the match against Iceland 8-1. The Dutch football legend Johan Cruijff scored for the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The Go Ahead Eagles
The Go Ahead Eagles, nicknamed Kowet, use De Adelaarshorst for home games. The football club was founded in 1902 under a different name. The Eagles have a fierce rivalry with PEC Zwolle. The football derby between the Go Ahead Eagles and PEC Zwolle is known as the IJsselderby. The first-ever IJsselderby ended in a 3-3 draw. In 1917, the Go Ahead Eagles were crowned Dutch football champions for the first time in their history. They were crowned football champions of the Netherlands four times in the 20th century. The Eagles reached the Dutch cup final in 1965 for the first time in their history. Feyenoord won the final, which took place in the city of Rotterdam in front of 31,000 spectators. Frans Bouwmeester scored the only goal in the Dutch cup final.
Marc Overmars
Marc Overmars, who scored 17 goals in 86 games for the national football team of the Netherlands, is one of the former players of the Go Ahead Eagles. He started and ended his professional football career with the Eagles. Overmars was born in 1973. In 1991, he left the Go Ahead Eagles for the Dutch club Willem II. Later, Marc Overmars left Willem II for the Dutch side Ajax. He also played for the English football giants Arsenal and the Spanish football giants FC Barcelona before he returned to the Go Ahead Eagles in 2008.
