FC Sheriff was founded in 1997. In 2010, they became the first football club with 10 Moldovan top-flight league titles. In 2021, FC Sheriff became the first club from Moldova in the prestigious UEFA Champions League. They won their first-ever UEFA Champions League group-stage match against Shakhtar Donetsk. Adama Malouda Traoré and Momo Yansané both scored for FC Sheriff in that game. FC Sheriff finished below the Spanish side Real Madrid and the Italian side Internazionale in the group stage of the tournament. The Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk finished below FC Sheriff in the group stage.
