The stadium became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in the Italian Republic. It became the largest sports venue by capacity in Apulia. In 1990, the stadium hosted five FIFA World Cup games. On 9 June 1990, the first FIFA World Cup match took place at the Stadio San Siro. The national football team of Romania won the game against the USSR after Marius Mihai Lăcătuș scored twice. 42,000 people showed up for the world championship game.
Another FIFA World Cup match
The national football team of the Italian Republic, commonly known as Italy, finished third place after beating England in one of the 1990 FIFA World Cup matches. The game between the Italian Republic and England took place at the Stadio San Nicola in front of 51,000 spectators. Roberto Baggio and Salvatore Schillaci both scored for the Italians. David Andrew Platt, who signed with SSC Bari in 1991, scored the only goal for England.
The European championship for football clubs
On 29 May 1991, the Stadio San Nicola hosted its first-ever European championship final. It was a football match between Crvena zvezda and Olympique de Marseille. It was the first European championship final for both clubs. A crowd of 51,000 attended the final. Crvena zvezda from Serbia won the game after beating the French side Olympique de Marseille after a penalty shoot-out. Darko Pančev, who was born in Skopje in 1965, scored the decisive penalty.
SSC Bari
Società Sportiva Calcio Bari, nicknamed I Galletti, use the venue for home games. The club was founded in 1908 under a different name. In 1990, they played their first Italian top-flight football league games at the Stadio San Nicola. SSC Bari finished 13th place in that top-flight league season. They won nine of the 34 league games. 11 matches ended in a draw. SSC Bari drew an average home attendance of 32,000 during that domestic league season.
