The stadium is named after a former player of Empoli FC. In 1986, Empoli FC were promoted to the Italian top-flight football league for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 14,000 in their first-ever top-flight league season. Empoli Football Club finished 13th place after winning eight of the 30 matches in that league season. Seven of those 30 games ended in a draw.
