The stadium opened with a football match between Cagliari Calcio and FC Crotone. The home side won the Italian top-division game 1-0. Cagliari Calcio, the first sports club from Sardinia with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, was founded in 1920. They played their first-ever Italian top-flight league game in 1964. In 1970, Cagliari Calcio were crowned Italian champions for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 25,000 during that domestic league season.
