The venue, which opened as the Stadio Giglio, is also sometimes used for rugby union. It opened with a football match between Reggiana and Juventus. 22,000 fans showed up for the game. Juventus Football Club were crowned world champions in football twice in the 20th century. The Italian super cup
In 2020, the stadium hosted its first-ever Italian super cup match. Juventus FC won the game after beating SSC Napoli 2-0. Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro scored the first goal of the match and Álvaro Borja Morata Martín scored the second goal of the match. Cristiano Ronaldo became the highest-paid athlete in the world. He played professional football for the Portuguese side Sporting Clube de Portugal, the English side Manchester United and the Spanish side Real Madrid before he signed with Juventus in 2018. In 2021, Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United. He joined Al-Nassr from Saudi Arabia after he left Manchester United.

Associazione Calcio Reggiana and Unione Sportive Sassuolo both use the stadium named MAPEI STADIUM – Città del Tricolore for home games. AC Reggiana was founded in 1919 and US Sassuolo was founded in 1920. Both clubs played numerous matches in the Italian top-flight football league. AC Reggiana played their first-ever Italian top-flight league match in the 20th century and US Sassuolo played their first-ever top-flight league match in the 21st century.
