On 20 July 2009, the Shamrock Rovers faced the Spanish football giants Real Madrid at the Tallaght Stadium. A capacity crowd of 10,000 showed up for the match, which ended in a victory for Real Madrid. The football legends Karim Mostafa Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro both made their debut for the club from Spain that day. Benzema scored the only goal in the game.
