The construction of the venue, which is also used for concerts, started in 2013. On 7 September 2014, the national football team of Hungary played their first match at the stadium. They lost the game against Northern Ireland. A few weeks later, Hungary won their first match at the Groupama Aréna. They defeated Finland 1-0 in a qualifier for the European championship for national football teams. Hungary reached the final of the prestigious FIFA World Cup in 1938 for the first time in their history. They lost the final, which took place in the French city of Paris. The national football team of Hungary also lost their second FIFA World Cup final in 1954.
The first matches at the Groupama Aréna
The Groupama Aréna opened with a football match between Ferencváros and the world famous English side Chelsea. Zoltán Gera, who played numerous matches for the national football team of Hungary, scored the first goal of the game between Ferencváros and Chelsea. Ramires Santos do Nascimento from Brazil and Francesc Fàbregas Soler from Spain both scored for Chelsea after the goal for Ferencváros. On 24 August 2014, the first Hungarian top-flight league match was played at the stadium. Ferencváros won the game 3-1.
Ferencváros
Ferencváros, the first Hungarian sports club with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, was founded in 1899. It became the first sports club from Budapest with a value of at least $10 million. Ferencváros were crowned Hungarian football champions in 1903 for the first time in their history. In 1967, Ferencváros became the first Hungarian football club with 20 top-flight league titles. They gathered 52 points during that domestic league season after winning 24 of the 30 league games. Four games ended in a draw and two games ended in a loss.
