The construction of the OPAP Arena started in 2017 and its construction costs were €98 million. AEK use the football venue for home games. On 3 Oktober 2022, AEK played their first-ever top-flight league match at the OPAP Arena. The home side won the game 4-1 in front of 32,000 fans. The club was founded in 1924 by Greek refugees from Constantinople. In 1931, AEK finished fourth place in their maiden Greek top-flight football league season.
Greek football champions
In 1939, AEK were crowned Greek football champions for the first time in their history after defeating Iraklis. In 1993, they became the third club with 10 Greek top-flight football league titles. Olympiacos were crowned Greek football champions 25 times before AEK won their 10th title. Panathinaikos won the top-flight football league of the Hellenic Republic 16 times before AEK won their 10th title.
The Greek cup tournament
AEK won the Greek cup tournament in 1932 for the first time in their history. In 1996, they became the third Greek football club with 10 Greek cup titles. AEK won their 10th Greek cup title after scoring seven goals in a final which attracted a crowd of 31,000. Olympiacos won the Greek cup tournament 19 times before AEK won their 10th Greek cup title. Panathinaikos won the competition 15 times before AEK won their 10th Greek cup title.
The UEFA Champions League
On 14 September 1994, AEK made their debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Their first-ever match in the group stage of the tournament ended in a goalless draw. Several days later, AEK played their first home game in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. 24,000 fans attended the European championship match. Toni Savevski scored the first goal for AEK in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
