The construction of the WWK ARENA started in 2007. Its construction costs were €45 million. In 2011, the venue hosted four FIFA Women’s World Cup matches. On 29 June 2011, the WWK ARENA hosted its first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup game. The women’s national football team of Norway won the match after beating Equatorial Guinea. Emilie Bosshard Haavi scored the only goal of the game. 12,000 people showed up for the match. Sweden won the second FIFA Women’s World Cup match at the WWK Arena after defeating the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in front of 23,000 spectators. England won the third one after beating Japan and Sweden won the fourth one after beating Australia.
FC Augsburg
FC Augsburg use the WWK ARENA for home games. The club was founded in 1907 under a different name. In 2011, FC Augsburg were promoted to the German top division for the first time in their history. They drew an average attendance of 30,000 in 17 home games in their first-ever top-flight football league season. FC Augsburg finished 14th place in their maiden top-flight league season.
