The Weserstadion, which sometimes has a capacity of 37,000 for international matches, is situated on the north bank of the Weser river. It became the largest sports venue by capacity in Bremen. The national football team of Germany played various matches at the stadium. They won several FIFA World Cup titles. Werder Bremen moved to the venue in 1947. The club was founded in 1899. SV Werder Bremen are among the first German sports clubs with a value of at least $100 million. They won the Bundesliga, the top-flight football league of Germany, several times. Werder Bremen were crowned German football champions for the first time in their history in 1965. They drew an average attendance of 27,000 in 15 home games during that domestic league season.
The UEFA Cup and Mesut Özil
In 2009, Werder Bremen faced the Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the last UEFA Cup final before the UEFA Cup was rebranded. The tournament is currently known as the UEFA Europa League. It is known as the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the prestigious UEFA Champions League. Mesut Özil, one of the first athletes with 10 million followers on his main social media page, joined Werder Bremen in 2008. In 2010, he left Werder Bremen for the Spanish club Real Madrid CF. The 2014 FIFA World Cup final
In 2014, Mesut Özil played his only FIFA World Cup final. He won the prestigious football match with Germany after beating the Argentine Republic 1-0. Mario Götze scored the only goal of the final. He played professional football for the German clubs Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern München before he signed with the Dutch side PSV from Eindhoven in 2020. All three clubs were crowned European football champions in the 21st century.
