The construction costs of the MEWA ARENA were €60 million. In 2014, the venue hosted its first-ever match for the national football team of Germany. The Germans won the game against Armenia 6-1. A crowd of 27,000 showed up for the match. Mario Götze was the only player who scored at least twice in the game. In 2019, the national football team of Germany also won their second game at the MEWA ARENA. They defeated Estonia 8-0 in that game.

The first-ever German top-flight football league match at the MEWA ARENA took place on 7 August 2011. 1. FSV Mainz 05 won the game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-0. 33,000 fans attended the match. In 2002, Bayer Leverkusen reached the final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. They lost the final against the Spanish side Real Madrid.
Sami Allagui

He played various matches for the national football team of Tunisia, the 12th national football team with an African championship title. Allagui was born in 1986. He played for the German football club Greuther Fürth before he signed with Mainz 05 in 2010. In 2012, Sami Allagui left 1. FSV Mainz 05. He signed with the German football club Hertha BSC that year.
