Extra stadium info – Stade du Hainaut

The construction of the venue started in 2008 and its construction costs were €75 million. The Stade du Hainaut hosted its first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup game on 9 June 2019. The women’s national football team of the Italian Republic won the match after beating Australia in front of 15,000 spectators. Brazil, Cameroon, England, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain also played at the Stade du Hainaut during the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Valenciennes FC

The Stade du Hainaut opened with a football match between Valenciennes Football Club and the German side Borussia Dortmund. 22,000 spectators attended the inaugural game. Valenciennes FC became the first sports club from Valenciennes with 100,000 followers on its main social media page. They played numerous football seasons in the French top-flight football league. The club, nicknamed Les Athéniens, was founded in 1913 under a different name. In 1951, Valenciennes FC played their first-ever French cup final. Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace won the match, which attracted a crowd of 61,000, 3-0.
