The construction of the stadium started in 2005 and its construction costs were €88 million. The Stade des Alpes opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. On 27 May 2008, the national football team of the French Republic faced Ecuador at the venue. The French side won the game 2-0 in front of a capacity crowd. On 22 December 2013, the Stade des Alpes hosted an ice hockey match. 19,000 fans showed up for the ice hockey game. It was a record attendance for a French top-flight ice hockey league match.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup
The Stade des Alpes hosted five FIFA Women’s World Cup games in 2019. Four of those five games were group-stage matches. The fifth one was a round-of-16 match. On 9 June 2019, the Stade des Alpes hosted its first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup match. The women’s national football team of Brazil won the game against Jamaica 3-0. 17,000 spectators showed up for the match. Nigeria won the stadium’s second FIFA Women’s World Cup game after defeating Korea 2-0. The third one was won by Canada after beating New Zealand 2-0. Australia won the fourth game after defeating Jamaica and Germany won the fifth one after beating Nigeria.
Tenants
FC Grenoble and Grenoble Foot 38 use the venue for home games. FC Grenoble was founded in 1892 and GF38 was founded in 1911. In 1954, FC Grenoble were crowned French rugby union champions for the first time in their history. Grenoble Foot 38 played their first-ever French top-flight football league games at the Stade des Alpes in 2008. Earlier that year, they were promoted to the French top division after an absence of several decades. GF38 finished 13th place in their first-ever French top-flight league season at the Stade des Alpes. They drew an average home attendance of 17,000 during that league season. The next football season, Grenoble Foot were relegated after finishing 20th place.
