In 1966, the stadium hosted its first game for the national football team of Denmark. The Portuguese Republic, commonly known as Portugal, won the game in front of 14,000 spectators. The football club named Esbjerg forenede Boldklubber use the Blue Water Arena for home matches. The club was founded in 1924. They won the Danish football championship several times. In the 1960s, EfB were crowned Danish football champions four times. They also won the Danish cup tournament once in that decade.
