Extra stadium info – Planet Group Arena
The stadium was named Ghelamco Arena before it became the Planet Group Arena. The construction of the stadium started in 2008 and its construction costs were €80 million. The venue opened with a football match between KAA Gent, one of the first Belgian sports teams with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, and the German football side VfB Stuttgart. The home side won the game 2-0. Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent, also known as De Buffalo’s, won the Belgian top division in 2015 for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 18,000 in that Belgian top-flight football league season.
The UEFA Champions League
In 2015, KAA Gent were one of the 32 UEFA Champions League participants for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 19,000 in four matches in that UEFA Champions League season. KAA Gent faced the French side Olympique lyonnais, the Spanish side Valencia CF and the Russian side Zenit in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. KAA Gent finished below Zenit in the group stage of the European championship for football clubs.
The round of 16
In 2016, KAA Gent faced the German side VfL Wolfsburg in their first two round-of-16 matches of the UEFA Champions League. Arsenal, AS Roma, Atlético de Madrid, Bayern München, Benfica, Chelsea, Dynamo Kyiv, FC Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, PSV, Real Madrid and Zenit also played in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League that year. VfL Wolfsburg defeated KAA Gent twice in the round of 16 of the tournament. The first round-of-16 game between KAA Gent and VfL Wolfsburg took place in Ghent in front of 19,000 fans. The second one took place in Wolfsburg in front of a crowd of 23,000.
