Austria Wien was founded in 1911 under a different name. In 1924, they were crowned Austrian football champions for the first time in their history. In 1992, Austria Wien became the second Austrian football club with 20 top-flight league titles. The club which is currently named Austria Wien won the Austrian cup tournament in 1921 for the first time in their history. In 1990, Austria Wien became the first club with 20 Austrian cup titles. They won their 20th Austrian cup title after defeating arch-rivals SK Rapid 3-1 in front of 16,000 spectators.
The European championship for football clubs
Austria Wien played their first-ever match in the European championship for football clubs in 1961. They faced the Portuguese side Benfica in the first round of the tournament. It was a two-legged first round. 78,000 fans showed up for the first leg, which took place in Vienna. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. A few days later, Benfica won the second leg 5-1 in front of a crowd of 50,000. The match took place in the Portuguese city of Lisbon.
