The construction of the stadium named Sân vận động Quốc gia Mỹ Đình started in 2002. It opened with a football match. World famous artists performed at the venue, which is also used for athletics. The national football team of Vietnam played numerous home games at the stadium. Many of those games were FIFA World Cup qualifiers. In 2007, 39,000 people attended the stadium’s first-ever AFC Asian Cup match, which was won by the national football team of Vietnam after defeating the United Arab Emirates. Australia, Japan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also played AFC Asian Cup games at the venue.
English football clubs
In 2013, Arsenal played their first match at the stadium. Olivier Jonathan Giroud from the French Republic scored a hat-trick for Arsenal in that game. Two years later, Manchester City played at the venue. Both English clubs are among the first sports clubs in the world with 10 million followers on their main social media page. Arsenal played their first-ever UEFA Champions League final in 2006. They lost the game against the Spanish football giants FC Barcelona. Manchester City played their first-ever UEFA Champions League final in 2021 against Chelsea from London. The English football powerhouse Chelsea won the game. Two years later, Manchester City won their first-ever UEFA Champions League title after beating the Italian side Internazionale.
Borussia Dortmund
In 2022, Borussia Dortmund played at the venue named Sân vận động Quốc gia Mỹ Đình. One of the goalposts broke in the football game which involved the German football club. Borussia Dortmund won the UEFA Champions League, the first sports competition with 100 million followers on its main social media page, in 1997 for the first time in their history. They won the title after defeating the Italian side Juventus. The same year, Borussia Dortmund won their first-ever world championship title after beating the Brazilian side Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. The match between Borussia Dortmund and Cruzeiro took place in the Japanese city of Tokyo in front of 46,000 spectators.
