The construction of the stadium started in 2008. The national football team of Uzbekistan played numerous home games at the stadium. Bunyodkor was founded in 2005 under a different name. They won the Uzbek top-flight football league in 2008 for the first time in their history. The same year, 13,000 people attended their first-ever AFC Champions League home match in Tashkent. Bunyodkor reached the semi-finals of the Asian championship for football clubs in their maiden appearance. Adelaide United, Gamba Osaka and the Urawa Red Diamonds also reached the semi-finals of the tournament in 2008.
Rivaldo
Rivaldo Vítor Borba Ferreira joined Bunyodkor in 2008. He played professional football for clubs in Brazil, Spain, the Italian Republic, the Hellenic Republic, Uzbekistan and Angola. One of those clubs was the Spanish side FC Barcelona, the second sports club with 100 million followers on their main social media page. In 2002, Rivaldo won the FIFA World Cup with the national football team of Brazil after defeating Germany. He also won the UEFA Champions League, the European championship for football clubs, with the Italian side AC Milan after beating Juventus in front of 62,000 spectators.
