The stadium opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Türkiye. Bursaspor, nicknamed Yesil Timsahlar (Green Crocodiles), was founded in 1963. They played their first-ever Turkish cup final in 1971. Bursaspor lost the two-legged final. In 1986, they won the Turkish cup tournament for the first time in their history. On 24 November 2010, Pablo Martín Batalla scored the first-ever UEFA Champions League goal for Bursaspor. Batalla, who was born in the Argentine city of Córdoba, scored the goal against Valencia CF.
Bursaspor finished below the English side Manchester United FC, the Spanish side Valencia CF and the Scottish side Rangers FC in the group stage of the European championship for football clubs. They finished last place after gathering one point in six games. On 7 December 2010, Bursaspor gathered the point after a 1-1 draw against the Rangers.
