Extra stadium info – Eryaman Stadyumu
The construction of the venue named Eryaman Stadyumu started in 2016. It opened with a football match between Ankaragücü and Alanyaspor. Ankaragücü and Gençlerbirliği both use the stadium for home games. Ankaragücü was founded in 1910 and Gençlerbirliği was founded in 1923. Both clubs won the Turkish top-flight football league in the 1940s for the first time in their history. Ankaragücü won their first-ever Turkish cup title in 1972. Gençlerbirliği won the Turkish cup tournament in 1987 for the first time in their history. Ankaragücü and Gençlerbirliği both won their first-ever Turkish super cup title in the 1980s.
The UEFA Cup
Ankaragücü and Gençlerbirliği both played in the competition that was known as the UEFA Cup. In 2004, Gençlerbirliği became the first of the two clubs in the fourth round of the tournament. The fourth round consisted of 16 clubs that year. AJA, AS Roma, Benfica, Celtic, Club Brugge, FC Barcelona, the Girondins de Bordeaux, Internazionale, Liverpool FC, Newcastle United, Olympique de Marseille, PSV, RCD Mallorca, Valencia CF and Villarreal CF also reached the fourth round in 2004. Gençlerbirliği faced Valencia CF in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup. The Spanish club named Valencia CF won the tournament that year.
An attack on the pitch
In 2023, a Turkish top-flight football league game between Ankaragücü and Rizespor erupted in chaos. The referee of the match was punched in the head by Faruk Koca, the president of Ankaragücü. The referee named Halil Umut Meler was also kicked in the face as he lay on the ground. Faruk Koca attacked the referee at the end of the game between Ankaragücü and Rizespor after Rizespor scored a 97th-minute equaliser. Koca walked on to the pitch and hit the referee when the final whistle blew in the 1-1 draw at the Eryaman Stadium. The Turkish top-flight football league has been suspended following the incident. The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wished Halil Umut Meler a speedy recovery soon after the incident.
