The construction of the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadyumu, which is also known as a venue for athletics and concerts, started in 1999. The venue, which opened as the largest stadium by capacity in Türkiye, was built for Türkiye’s failed bid for the Games of the Olympiad. It is named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first president of Türkiye. Several football clubs played home games at the stadium. The national football team of Türkiye, one of the first national football teams with a value of at least $100 million, played numerous home games at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadyumu.
Fatih Karagümrük and Galatasaray
Fatih Karagümrük use the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadyumu for home games. The football club was founded in 1925. They were promoted to the Turkish top-flight football league several times. The stadium’s record attendance was set in July 2002, when 79,000 people showed up for a football match between Galatasaray and Olympiacos. Galatasaray played various matches at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadyumu. Galatasaray, the first Turkish football team with 10 million followers on its main social media page, also became the first Turkish football club with 20 top-flight league titles. In 2000, they won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. Galatasaray also won the Turkish top-flight football league and the Turkish cup tournament that year.
AC Milan and Liverpool FC
In 2005, the stadium hosted the UEFA Champions League final between Associazione Calcio Milan from the Italian Republic and Liverpool Football Club from the United Kingdom. AC Milan reached the final after defeating PSV from Eindhoven and Liverpool FC reached the final after beating Chelsea from London. Liverpool FC won the UEFA Champions League final after defeating AC Milan in a penalty shoot-out. 72,000 people showed up for the final. Liverpool FC won the European championship for football clubs four times before they won the prestigious tournament in 2005.
Internazionale and Manchester City
In 2023, the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadyumu hosted its second UEFA Champions League final. Internazionale reached the final after defeating AC Milan and Manchester City reached the final after defeating Real Madrid. Rodrigo Hernández Cascante scored the only goal in the final, which attracted a crowd of 71,000 people. Manchester City were crowned European football champions for the first time in their history after winning the UEFA Champions League final in 2023.
