The construction of the stadium started in 2011. It opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Istanbul. The stadium is named after Fatih Terim. He won various trophies with Galatasaray, the first sports club from Türkiye with 10 million followers on its main social media page. Fatih Terim was the manager of Galatasaray in 2000. That year, he won the UEFA Cup, the Turkish top-flight football league and the Turkish cup tournament with Galatasaray. It was the first-ever UEFA Cup title for a Turkish football club. Galatasaray won the UEFA Cup after beating the English side Arsenal FC in a penalty shoot-out.

İstanbul Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü, nicknamed Boz Baykuşlar, moved to the stadium in 2014. In 2011, they reached the Turkish cup final for the first time in their history. Beşiktaş won the cup final in a penalty shoot-out. 28,000 people attended the final, which took place in the city of Kayseri. In 2020, İstanbul Başakşehir were crowned Turkish football champions for the first time in their history after gathering 69 points in 34 matches. 20 of those 34 league games ended in a victory for İstanbul Başakşehir. Nine league games ended in a draw.
