The construction of the Lusail Stadium started in 2017. It opened as the largest stadium by capacity in Qatar. The venue opened as one of the largest stadiums by capacity in Asia. Amr Abdel Basset Abdel Azeez Diab became the first artist who performed at the Lusail Stadium. He was born in the Egyptian city of Port Said in 1962. Amr Diab became the best-selling artist from the Middle East.
Al-Hilal and Zamalek
The Lusail Stadium opened with a football match between Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia and Zamalek from Egypt. Al-Hilal, one of the first Asian sports clubs with 10 million followers on its main social media page, won the game. Al-Hilal and Zamalek both won a domestic top-flight league title in the year of the opening of the Lusail Iconic Stadium. Both clubs also won several continental championship titles.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup
On 22 November 2022, the Lusail Stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup match. 88,000 people attended the game, which was won by the national football team of Saudi Arabia after beating the Argentine Republic. The Argentine football star Lionel Andrés Messi, who scored hundreds of goals for the Spanish side FC Barcelona, scored the first goal of the match. Saleh bin Khalid bin Mohammed al-Shehri scored the second goal of the game and Salem bin Mohammed bin Shafi al-Dawsari scored the third goal of the game.
The FIFA World Cup final
The Lusail Stadium hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. The game took place on 18 December 2022. A capacity crowd of 88,000 showed up for the prestigious world championship match. The national football team of the Argentine Republic won the game after beating the French Republic in a penalty shoot-out. Gonzalo Ariel Montiel, who started his professional football career with Club Atlético River Plate from the Argentine Republic, scored the winning goal in the penalty shoot-out. The Argentine football legend Lionel Andrés Messi and the French football legend Kylian Mbappé Lottin both scored multiple goals in the final.
