The construction of the stadium named Al-Thumama Stadium started in 2017. It opened with a football match. The game was won by Al-Sadd, the first football club from Qatar with 10 domestic top-flight league titles. In 1989, Al-Sadd were crowned Asian football champions for the first time in their history.
