Extra stadium info – Al-Thumama Stadium
The construction of the stadium named Al-Thumama Stadium started in 2017. It opened with a football match. The game was won by Al-Sadd, the first football club from Qatar with 10 domestic top-flight league titles. In 1989, Al-Sadd were crowned Asian football champions for the first time in their history. Al-Duhail, Al-Rayyan and Al-Sadd were the football clubs from Qatar with at least 100,000 followers on their main social media page when Al-Thumama Stadium opened.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup
On 21 November 2022, Al-Thumama Stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup match. The national football team of the Netherlands won the world championship game after beating Senegal. Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen both scored for the Netherlands in that match. The national football teams of Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, the French Republic, Iran, Morocco, Poland, the Portuguese Republic, Qatar, Senegal, Spain and the United States also played at Al-Thumama Stadium during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The last 2022 FIFA World Cup game at the venue was won by Morocco. They defeated the Portuguese Republic, commonly known as Portugal, in the quarter-final. 44,000 people attended the FIFA World Cup match.
