The construction of the football stadium, which has a retractable roof, started in 2014. It is among the main sports venues in Qatar. The stadium opened with a football match, which was won by Al-Duhail after beating Al-Sadd. 38,000 people showed up for the game between the two football clubs from Qatar. In 1989, Al-Sadd became the first football club from Qatar with an Asian championship title. Al-Janoub Stadium hosted its first-ever AFC Champions League final on 19 December 2020. Ulsan HD from the Republic of Korea, commonly known as South Korea, won the Asian football championship game after beating Persepolis from Iran.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup
Al-Janoub Stadium hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup game on 22 November 2022. The national football team of the French Republic, commonly known as France, won the group-stage match after beating Australia 4-1. Cameroon, Denmark, Ghana, Serbia, the Swiss Confederation, Tunisia and Uruguay also played at Al-Janoub Stadium during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. On 5 December 2022, the venue hosted a FIFA World Cup match between Japan and Croatia. The national football team of Croatia won the round-of-16 game after a penalty shoot-out. 42,000 people attended the match.
Al-Wakrah SC
Al-Wakrah SC use Al-Janoub Stadium for home games. The club was founded in 1959 under a different name. Al-Wakrah SC won the super cup of Qatar in 1989 for the first time in their history. They won the super cup of Qatar three times in the 20th century. In 1999, Al-Wakrah SC were crowned football champions of Qatar for the first time in their history. They won 12 of the 16 league matches during that league season. Three of those 16 matches ended in a draw. Al-Wakrah SC won the top-flight football league in 2001 for the second time in their history.
