The football stadium, which has a retractable roof, became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in the Arab world. The construcion of Al-Bayt Stadium started in 2014. It opened with a 2021 FIFA Arab Cup group-stage game between the national football teams of Qatar and Bahrain. 47,000 fans showed up for the game. Abdulaziz Hatem from Qatar scored the only goal of the match in the 69th minute of the match. Almoez Ali, Akram Afif, Hassan al-Haydos, Oliver Kass Kawo and Mouhamad Anez also scored at Al-Bayt Stadium in the group stage of the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup
On 20 November 2022, Al-Bayt Stadium hosted the first-ever FIFA World Cup match in Qatar. 67,000 people attended the group-stage game. The national football team of Ecuador won the game after Enner Remberto Valencia Lastra scored twice against Qatar. Costa Rica, Croatia, England, Germany, Morocco, the Netherlands, Spain and the United States also played at Al-Bayt Stadium during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Ecuador, Germany and the Netherlands were the only teams which won a group-stage match at Al-Bayt Stadium during the world championship for national football teams.
The knockout stage
The venue named Al-Bayt Stadium hosted three matches during the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The national football team of England won the first one, which was a round-of-16 game, after beating Senegal. The second one, a quarter-final, was won by the French Republic after defeating England. The French side also won the third one. Morocco lost the semi-final. The Argentine Republic won the world championship after beating the French Republic in a penalty shoot-out. Croatia finished third place and Morocco finished fourth place.
