The construction of the venue started in September 1982. It hosted numerous matches for the national football team of Oman. They played their first-ever AFC Asian Cup game in 2004. That year, Oman finished below Japan and Iran in the group stage of the tournament. They finished above Thailand in their first-ever participation in the group stage of the AFC Asian Cup, which is known as the Asian championship for national football teams.
