The construction of the venue, which is also known as the Big Crown Stadium, started in December 1998. It became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in the Republic of Korea, commonly known as South Korea. The stadium opened in 2001 with a football match. The national football team of Korea won the game after defeating Brazil 1-0. The national football team of Brazil won several FIFA World Cup titles.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup
The Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium hosted several FIFA World Cup matches in 2002. The national football teams of Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Türkiye, the United States and Uruguay played at the venue during the world championship. The first FIFA World Cup game at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium took place on 1 June 2002. Denmark won the group-stage match after beating Uruguay. Jon Dahl Tomasson scored the first FIFA World Cup goal at the venue. He scored twice against Uruguay in the world championship game.
Other FIFA World Cup matches
The second FIFA World Cup match at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium took place on 3 June 2002. The national football team of Brazil won the group-stage game against Türkiye 2-1. The third FIFA World Cup match at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium took place on 21 June 2002. Germany won the quarter-final against the United States 1-0. Michael Ballack scored the only goal of the game, which attracted a crowd of 37,000.
Ulsan HD
Ulsan HD moved to the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium in 2001. They won the AFC Champions League, the Asian championship for football clubs, in 2012 for the first time in their history. Ulsan HD won the title after beating Al-Ahli SFC from Saudi Arabia. In 2020, they were crowned Asian football champions for the second time in their history. Ulsan HD defeated the Iranian side Persepolis in the AFC Champions League final that year.
