The Pohang Steelers use the Pohang Steel Yard for home games. The football club was founded in 1973 under a different name. In 1997, the Steelers were crowned Asian football champions for the first time in their history. They won the title after beating the Korean club which is currently named Seongnam FC 2-1. The final between the Steelers and the club which is currently named Seongnam FC took place in the Malaysian city of Shah Alam. Park Tae-ha and Park Ji-ho both scored for the Pohang Steelers in the final. They both played for the national football team of Korea. The Steelers reached the final of the Asian championship for football clubs in 1997 after winning against Persepolis from Iran. They won their second Asian championship title on 5 April 1998.
The group stage of the AFC Champions League
The Pohang Steelers played their first game in the group stage of the AFC Champions League on 12 March 2008. They faced Adelaide United from Australia in the game, which took place at the Pohang Steel Yard. The visitors won the match after Robert Richard Cornthwaite and Bruce José Djité both scored once. The Steelers finished below Adelaide United from Australia and Changchun Yatai from China in the group stage of the AFC Champions League.
The Pohang Steelers in 2009
The Steelers won their third Asian championship title in 2009. They won the title after defeating Al-Ittihad from Saudi Arabia. The final between Al-Ittihad and the Pohang Steelers took place in the Japanese city of Tokyo in front of a crowd of 25,000. In 2009, the Steelers drew an average home attendance of 11,000 in the Korean top-flight football league.
The FIFA Club World Cup
On 11 December 2009, the Steelers faced Tout Puissant Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup game. Denílson Martins Nascimento, who was born in Brazil in 1976, scored twice for the Pohang Steelers that day. The Steelers won the quarter-final. They lost their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against the Estudiantes de La Plata from the Argentine Republic, commonly known as Argentina. The semi-final took place in the United Arab Emirates on 15 December 2009. The Steelers finished third place in their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup participation after winning a penalty shoot-out against Atlante FC from the United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico.
