Extra stadium info – Daegu Stadium
The construction of the Daegu Stadium, which is nicknamed Blue Arc, started in 1997. It opened as the Daegu Stadium. In 2002, the venue became the Daegu World Cup Stadium. In 2008, it became the Daegu Stadium again. The stadium was a venue for the 2003 Summer Universiade and the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. Usain Bolt from Jamaica participated in the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. Bolt, nicknamed Lightning Bolt, broke multiple world records in athletics.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup
The Daegu Stadium hosted four 2002 FIFA World Cup games. The first one was a group-stage game between the national football teams of Denmark and Senegal, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was born in Denmark in 1976, scored the first FIFA World Cup goal at the Daegu Stadium. The second FIFA World Cup game at the venue was won by South Africa after beating Slovenia. The third one was a match between Korea and the United States, which ended in a draw. The last 2002 FIFA World Cup match at the Daegu Stadium was the third place match, which was won by the national football team of Türkiye after defeating Korea. 63,000 people attended the game.
Daegu FC
Daegu Football Club played numerous home games at the Daegu Stadium. The club was founded in 2002. In 2018, they won the Korean cup tournament for the first time in their history. Daegu FC won the title after beating Ulsan Hyundai in a two-legged final. The second leg took place at the Daegu Stadium. 18,000 fans attended the match. In 2021, Daegu FC reached the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League for the first time in their history. They faced Nagoya Grampus from Japan in their first-ever round-of-16 match of the Asian championship for football clubs. Nagoya Grampus won the game against Daegu FC 4-2.
