On 12 May 2001, the stadium hosted its first-ever Japanese top-flight football league match. The Shimizu S-Pulse won the game after beating Júbilo Iwata in front of 52,000 spectators. On 28 September 2019, the venue named Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA hosted its first-ever Rugby World Cup match. The national rugby union team of Japan won the game after beating Ireland 19-12. 47,000 fans showed up for the match.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup
The national football teams of Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, England, Germany and Russia played at the Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The first FIFA World Cup game at the venue took place on 11 June 2002. Germany won the group-stage match after defeating Cameroon in front of 47,000 spectators. Marco Bode, who played hundreds of games for the German side Werder Bremen, scored the first FIFA World Cup goal at the Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA. Belgium won the second FIFA World Cup match at the venue after beating Russia in the group stage of the tournament. The third FIFA World Cup game at the Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA was won by Brazil after defeating England. The quarter-final took place on 21 June 2002.
