Sagan Tosu were promoted to the highest level of Japanese football in 2011 for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 11,000 in their first-ever top-flight season. In 2018, Sagan Tosu signed the famous Spanish striker Fernando Torres. He won the 2010 FIFA World Cup with the national football team of Spain after beating the Netherlands. Torres played professional football for Atlético de Madrid, Liverpool FC, Chelsea and AC Milan before he signed with Sagan Tosu. He won the prestigious UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012. It was the first European championship title for Chelsea Football Club.
