The stadium is also known as the Hiroshima Big Arch. It hosted the 1992 AFC Asian Cup final, which was won by the national football team of Japan after defeating Saudi Arabia 1-0. Football club Sanfrecce Hiroshima is among the first sports clubs from Japan with a value of at least $10 million. It became one of the first Japanese football clubs with 100,000 followers on its main social media page. Sanfrecce Hiroshima won the professional Japanese top-flight football league in 2012 for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 17,000 in that league season.
