The construction of the stadium, which became the largest venue by capacity in Iraq, started in 2009. It became one of the venues used by the national football team of Iraq. They played their first-ever FIFA World Cup match in 1986. Iraq were one of the 24 FIFA World Cup participants in 1986. In 2007, the national football team of Iraq were crowned Asian football champions for the first time in their history. They won the title after beating Saudi Arabia in Indonesia.
