The construction of the football stadium, which has a retractable roof, started in 2019. It opened as the largest sports venue by capacity in Indonesia. The Jakarta International Stadium opened with a football match between Persija and the Thai side Chonburi Football Club. The game, which attracted a crowd of 60,000, ended in a 3-3 draw. Persija and Chonburi FC are among the first south-eastern Asian sports clubs with 1 million followers on their main social media page. In 2007, Chonburi Football Club were crowned Thai football champions for the first time in their history. They won the title after gathering 63 points in 30 league games.
Persija
Persija, nicknamed Macan Kemayoran (Kemayoran Tigers), used several stadiums for home matches. In 2001, they were crowned Indonesian football champions for the 10th time in their history. Persija won their 10th title after winning a game in front of tens of thousands of spectators in Jakarta. Persija have an intense rivalry with Persib, which has led to violence among fans on several occasions. Both clubs are located on the island of Java. Persib became the first sports club from Indonesia with 10 million followers on its main social media page.
The 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup
The Jakarta International Stadium hosted games for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The first FIFA U-17 World Cup at the venue took place on 11 November 2023. England won the youth football match after scoring 10 goals. Justin Oke Oboavwoduo was the only player who scored multiple goals in the game. Later that day, the Jakarta International Stadium hosted its second game for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Iran won the world championship match after defeating Brazil. On 12 November 2023, the French Republic won the third FIFA U-17 World Cup game at the Jakarta International Stadium after defeating Burkina Faso. Later that day, the United States won the fourth FIFA U-17 World Cup match at the venue after beating Korea.
