The venue is named after one of the highest mountains in the world. The mountain lies partly in Nepal and partly in Sikkim. East Bengal, the first football club from West Bengal with 1 million followers on its main social media page, played numerous home games at the Kanchenjunga Stadium. The club was founded in 1920 by people who had come to the city which is now known as Kolkata from the region which is now known as Bangladesh. Mohammed Salim is one of the former players of East Bengal. He became the first Indian football player who played for Celtic, one of the first European football champions.
The results of East Bengal
In 1986, East Bengal played in the group stage of the Asian championship for football clubs for the first time in their history. They were one of the six football clubs in the group stage of the tournament. In 2020, they lost their first-ever Indian Super League match against their arch-rivals ATK Mohun Bagan. East Bengal finished ninth place in their inaugural ISL season. They won three games, they drew eight games and they lost nine games in that football league season.
