The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium is named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a former an Indian politician. It opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in India. The stadium became one of the venues used by the national cricket team of India. In 1983, they were crowned world cricket champions for the first time in their history. They won the third edition of the world cricket championship in front of 24,000 spectators in the United Kingdom. It was the third consecutive world cricket championship final in London. The following edition of the tournament, which was won by Australia after beating England, took place in India.

The Lucknow Super Giants and the Uttar Pradesh cricket team use the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium for home matches. The Super Giants cricket club was founded in 2021. Andrew Flower became the first coach of the Lucknow Super Giants. He played numerous matches for the national cricket team of Zimbabwe. The Super Giants, the first cricket club from Uttar Pradesh with 1 million followers on its main social media page, play in the Indian Premier League. They played their first-ever IPL game on 28 March 2022. The Gujarat Titants won the match.
