The cricket venue is also known as the Mohali Stadium or the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. It opened with a cricket match between the national cricket teams of India and South Africa. India won the game. The venue hosted several Cricket World Cup matches. The first-ever Cricket World Cup match at the stadium took place in 1996 and the national cricket team of Australia won the game. The second Cricket World Cup game at the Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium took place in 2011. South Africa won the game after defeating the Netherlands.

The Punjab Kings, one of the first cricket clubs with a value of at least $10 million, used the venue for home games. They play in the Indian Premier League, the most popular cricket league in India. The cricket club was founded in 2008 under a different name. They were named Kings XI Punjab. The Kings played in the inaugural Indian Premier League in 2008. They finished second place, below the Rajasthan Royals. The Rajasthan Royals gathered 22 points in 14 IPL matches and the Punjab Kings gathered 20 points in 14 IPL matches. The Kings won 10 of those 14 games.
