The venue was named Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium before it became the Niranjan Shah Stadium. It is owned by the Saurashtra Cricket Association. The Gujarat Lions, a former cricket club, played various home games at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. They performed in the Indian Premier League, the most popular Indian cricket league. The Gujarat Lions folded in 2017.
