The stadium is named after Dhyan Chand, a former Indian field hockey player. It hosted numerous matches for the Hockey India League, which became the Indian top-flight field hockey league. The Hockey India League, the Indian Premier League, the Indian Super League and the Pro Kabaddi League became the first Indian sports leagues with 1 million followers on its’ main social media page.
