The stadium, which is also known as a venue for athletics, concerts and rugby union, is named after a former football player of Dinamo Tbilisi. It became the largest sports venue by capacity in Georgia. The Boris Paitchadze Dinamo Arena drew attendances above 100,000 for football matches. The national football team of Georgia played numerous matches at the venue. It opened with a football match between Dinamo Tbilisi, the first Georgian sports club with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, and Cardiff City from Wales. The home side won the game 3-0. Dinamo Tbilisi won the first-ever edition of the Georgian football championship in 1990. They won 10 consecutive Georgian top-flight football league titles between 1990 and 1999.
Rugby union
The Boris Paitchadze Dinamo Arena became the first Georgian venue with an attendance above 50,000 for a rugby union match. In 2002, the national rugby union team of Georgia qualified for the Rugby World Cup for the first time in their history after defeating Russia at the venue. In 2003, they played their first-ever Rugby World Cup game. England won the match, which took place in Australia. Samoa, South Africa and Uruguay also defeated Georgia during the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
