Extra stadium info – Kim Il-sung Stadium
The stadium is named after Kim Il-sung, a former leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The venue hosted numerous home games of the national football team of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea. In 1966, they played their first-ever FIFA World Cup match against the USSR. North Korea lost the game. Their second FIFA World Cup game was a 1-1 draw against Chile. North Korea won their third world championship game against the Italian Republic, commonly known as Italy. The national football team of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea reached the quarter-finals of the 1966 FIFA World Cup. They were defeated by the Portuguese Republic in the quarter-finals.
