The He Long Stadium is named after a former Chinese military leader. It opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in China. The stadium is used for several events, like athletics, concerts and football. The national football team of China played numerous matches at the venue. In 1984, they reached the final of the Asian championship for national football teams for the first time in their history. China faced Saudi Arabia in that final. They played their first-ever FIFA World Cup matches in 2002.
