The Zhuhai Sports Centre Stadium, which is also used for athletics, is part of the Zhuhai Sports Centre. The venue opened as the largest stadium by capacity in the city of Zhuhai. It became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Guangdong. The Zhuhai Sports Centre Stadium is featured on the movie named Shaolin Soccer. It is a sports comedy movie directed by Stephen Chow Sing-chi. He also stars in the lead role. The film revolves around a former Shaolin monk who reunites his five brothers. They apply their superhuman martial arts skills to play football.
PSV and VfL Wolfsburg
In 2016, the Zhuhai Sports Centre Stadium hosted a football match between the Dutch side PSV and the German side VfL Wolfsburg. The Germans won the game after a penalty shoot-out. PSV from Eindhoven won the tournament which is currently known as the UEFA Europa League in 1978 for the first time in their history. In 1988, they became the 36th football club in a decisive world championship match. The same year, PSV won the Dutch cup tournament, the Dutch top-flight football league and the European championship for football clubs. In 2007, PSV became the second Dutch football club with 20 top-flight football league titles.
Sun Xiang
In 2007, Sun Xiang became the first Chinese football player in the prestigious UEFA Champions League, which is known as the European championship for football clubs. He faced the English football giants Arsenal Football Club with PSV in his UEFA Champions League debut. Sun Xiang played 69 games for the national football team of China between 2002 and 2013.
