Extra stadium info – Zhongshan Sports Centre Stadium
The Zhongshan Sports Centre Stadium is used for several events, like athletics, concerts and football. It became the largest sports venue by capacity in the city of Zhongshan. The stadium is part of the Zhongshan Sports Centre. In 1991, it was one of the venues for the world championship for women’s national football teams. It was the first edition of the tournament which is currently known as the FIFA Women’s World Cup. All matches of the tournament took place in Guangdong.
The group stage
The Italian Republic, commonly known as Italy, won the first match for the tournament which is now known as the at the FIFA Women’s World Cup at the Zhongshan Sports Centre Stadium. They won the group-stage game after beating Nigeria 1-0 in front of 12,000 spectators. Carolina Morace scored the only goal of the match. She scored 105 goals in 150 games for the women’s national football team of the Italian Republic. Germany won the second match for the tournament at the venue in front of a crowd of 10,000. They also won the third one after beating the Italians in front of 12,000 people. Both games which were won by Germany were group-stage games.
The knockout stage
On 24 November 1991, the Zhongshan Sports Centre Stadium hosted its fourth game for the tournament which is now known as the at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. It was a knockout stage match. The women’s national football team of Germany won the match against Denmark. They won the game after a penalty shoot-out. The quarter-final attracted a capacity crowd. The tournament was won by the United States after beating Norway. The final took place in the city of Guangzhou in front of 63,000 spectators. The national women’s football team of Sweden finished third place after defeating Germany 4-0.
