The construction of the arena started in 2008. It opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in the city of Guangzhou. World famous artists performed at the Guangzhou International Sports Arena. On 16 October 2010, the indoor venue hosted its first-ever match between two National Basketball Association clubs. The Houston Rockets, one of the first basketball clubs with 10 million followers on its main social media page, won the game after beating the club which is now known as the Brooklyn Nets 95-86. A capacity crowd attended the match between the two basketball clubs from the United States of America.
The Rockets
In 1994, the Houston Rockets were crowned NBA champions for the first time in their history. They won the title after beating the New York Knicks. The Houston Rockets drew an average home attendance of 15,000 during that National Basketball Association season. In 1995, the Rockets were crowned NBA champions for the second time in their history. They faced the Orlando Magic from Florida in the finals.
Yao Ming
The Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming is one of the former players of the Houston Rockets. He played numerous games in the Chinese Basketball Association before he signed with the Rockets in 2002. Yao Ming played hundreds of NBA matches for the Houston Rockets. During his final season at the Rockets, he was the tallest active player in the National Basketball Association. Yao Ming became the captain of the national basketball team of China. He won several trophies with the team. Yao Ming also played Olympic basketball games with the national basketball team of China. In 2017, the Chinese basketball legend was unanimously elected as chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association. The CBA is known as the top-flight basketball league of China.
