The Century Lotus Stadium opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Guangdong. It became one of the venues used by the national football team of China. They played their first-ever FIFA World Cup matches in 2002. The first FIFA World Cup game involving China took place in the Korean city of Gwangju. 27,000 spectators attended the match, which ended in a victory for Costa Rica. The Costa Ricans scored twice against China.
