The stadium is also used for athletics and concerts. It is owned by the city government of Chongqing. The Chongqing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium opened as the largest sports venue by capacity in Chongqing. The venue hosted numerous Chinese top-flight football league games. The Chinese league is among the first sports leagues with 1 million followers on their main social media page.
The 2004 AFC Asian Cup
The Chongqing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium was one of the 2004 AFC Asian Cup venues. The AFC Asian Cup is known as the Asian championship for national football teams. The stadium hosted its first-ever AFC Asian Cup game on 20 July 2004. The national football team of Japan won the game against Oman 1-0. 35,000 spectators showed up for the match. The 2004 AFC Asian Cup was won by Japan after beating China in the final. Li Ming scored the first goal of the game, followed by Takashi Fukunishi, Kōji Nakata and Keiji Tamada. 62,000 showed up for the final, which took place in Beijing. China reached the final after defeating Iran and Japan reached the final after beating Bahrain.
Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic
The folded football club Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic used the stadium for home games. The former club was founded in 1995 under a different name. In 1997, they drew an average home attendance of 27,000 in their first-ever Chinese top-flight football league season. The former football club from Chongqing drew an average home attendance of 37,000 in 15 league games in 2015. It became the highest average home attendance for the former club. Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic was dissolved in 2022.
